How we make every gallon

We refill two kinds of water at all three stores: purified water, made fresh daily through reverse osmosis and a coconut carbon filter, and alkaline water remineralized to a higher pH. Here is how we make it, and how to choose between them.

How we make it

From county water to your bottle

We start with the local water supply and purify it in a few clean steps. Every batch is made fresh the same day, with nothing added to it.

1

Local Alameda County water

Every gallon starts with the public water supply from the Alameda County Water District, the same water that reaches your tap. From there, we purify it.

The starting point
2

Reverse osmosis

We push the water through a reverse osmosis membrane that removes dissolved solids, minerals, and other impurities, leaving clean, pure water.

3

Coconut carbon filter

The purified water runs through a coconut-shell carbon filter. This is the step that gives every gallon its fresh, great taste.

4

Made fresh, nothing added

We make our water fresh every day and add nothing to it. Bottled water can sit for months before you drink it. Ours is dispensed the same week it is made.

No preservatives, ever

Alkaline water

What alkaline water actually is

Alkaline water is water with a higher pH than plain drinking water, usually somewhere between 8 and 9.5 rather than the neutral 7. We start from the same reverse-osmosis purified water above, then add back food-grade minerals like calcium and magnesium to lift the pH and round out the taste.

0 · acidic7 · neutral14 · alkaline

Most bottled water sits near 7. Our alkaline water lands around 8 to 9.5.

Plenty of customers prefer the smoother, slightly sweeter taste, and the added minerals are the same ones found in natural spring water. We will be straight with you though: research on health benefits beyond ordinary hydration is still limited and mixed. We sell alkaline water because people like how it tastes and feels, not because it is a cure for anything.

Choosing

Reverse osmosis or alkaline?

Both start from the same purification. The only real difference is what happens at the end, and it comes down to taste and preference.

Purified (RO)

  • Clean, neutral taste with nothing added back
  • Best for coffee, tea, cooking, and appliances
  • The lowest price per gallon

Best for you if you want the purest, most versatile water for everyday drinking and cooking.

Alkaline

  • Higher pH, around 8 to 9.5
  • Smoother, slightly sweeter mineral taste
  • Calcium and magnesium added back in

Best for you if you prefer the taste of mineral water and like it a little softer on the palate.

Refill vs bottled

Why refilling wins

The same water in a store-bought plastic bottle costs many times more and leaves a pile of plastic behind. Bring your own jug and the math changes fast.

Common questions

Good to know

Is reverse osmosis water safe to drink every day?

Yes. Reverse osmosis removes contaminants and dissolved solids, then a coconut carbon filter polishes the taste. We make every batch fresh daily with no preservatives added. If you want minerals added back, our alkaline water is the same purified water remineralized.

Does reverse osmosis remove the minerals I need?

RO does remove most dissolved minerals along with contaminants. For most people the minerals in water are a small part of overall intake compared with food. If you prefer mineral content and a higher pH, choose our alkaline water, which adds calcium and magnesium back in.

What pH is your alkaline water?

It typically lands between 8 and 9.5, compared with a neutral pH of 7 for plain water. The exact level comes from the food-grade minerals we add after purification.

Can I bring my own bottles to refill?

Absolutely, that is the whole idea. Bring any clean jug or bottle. We also sell bottles in store if you need one. Members pay $0.375 a gallon for purified water and $0.90 for alkaline.

Which should I get, purified or alkaline?

If you want the cleanest, most neutral water for drinking, coffee, and cooking, go with purified RO. If you prefer the taste of mineral water and a higher pH, go alkaline. Both come from the same purification, so you cannot go wrong. Try both and see what you like.
